Ilok. The town of the rising sun, at least when it comes to Croatia.

A town where it seems that from every alley, the songs of Balašević drift out. Both the cheerful ones and the melancholic ones. A town that lies at the very edge of the country, where the Danube flows between states, cultures, and time.

Endless vineyards on the slopes of Fruška Gora give you the feeling of being somewhere much further south or west. Sometimes they remind you of Tuscany, sometimes of Burgundy, but in truth, they look like something entirely their own. Like Ilok.

Above the river rises the old town. Below it, vineyards have been growing for centuries, producing the Traminac that has made Ilok famous far beyond the borders of Croatia. Here too are the Ilok Cellars, old manors, stately houses, and the traces of eras that passed through this land, leaving behind stories you can still feel at every step.

This is a place that carries a certain kind of silence. Not an empty one, but one that comes from the layers of history, people, and land. A silence that slows you down just enough to notice the things that usually pass unnoticed.

Srijem and Ilok are different from anything we’ve ridden on Epic Rides so far. A part of Croatia that rarely makes the headlines, but has stood here for thousands of years. And regardless of everything history has brought, it has remained what it has always been — a place where land, river, and people are inseparably connected.

Life here feels slower. Vineyards follow the rhythm of the seasons, the Danube its own flow, and the people their customs. And that is exactly why this place leaves such a strong impression on anyone who gives it a chance.

If there is a place that gives full meaning to the phrase “Get to know your homeland so you can love it more,” it is Ilok and Srijem.

The nobles who built their summer houses here knew it. The travellers who passed along the Danube for centuries knew it. We discovered it too.
